Verse of the Day

Verse of the Day for Friday, 23 Oct 2026.

“I baptise with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.

— John 1:26 Verse of the Day

Thoughts on Today’s Verse of the Day

The Pharisees have challenged John the Baptist’s right to baptise (John 1:19–25). Jewish converts were often baptised, but the Baptists were performing this ritual on those who were already Jewish.

Even more controversially, he did so without any claim to priesthood or prophet-hood. He is neither the Saviour, a reborn Elijah, nor the prophet Moses predicted (Deuteronomy 18:18). Earlier (John 1:25), sceptical leaders essentially asked the Baptist, “Who do you think you are?”

He responds that his ministry uses only physical tools, such as baptism with water. The ministry of Jesus will go far beyond physical rituals. The Baptist then immediately declares that someone present is unknown to the Pharisees.

He will explain that this “One” is so much greater than he is that he isn’t worthy to untie his sandals. In this era, people walked everywhere, and their feet would become covered in grime and animal waste. Tending to someone else’s shoes was the lowest task for the lowest servant. This is how far beneath the Promised One John the Baptist considers himself. — Verse of the Day.

My Prayer…

Heavenly Father, with a heart full of gratitude, I come before You, seeking Your abundant grace to fill my barns with plenty. I trust in Your divine providence and hold fast to the faith that You will provide for my needs and those of my loved ones.

May the fruits of my labour be blessed, and may I always remember to share the gifts You bestow upon me.

In moments of uncertainty, let hope rise within me, reminding me of Your ever-present love and support. I offer this prayer in faith, trusting in Your perfect timing and benevolent will. Amen. — Verse of the day.
